Embedded Systems are the future of our technology world. At the core of every significant technological piece lie elements of embedded systems. These range from self-controlled cars, intelligent building designs, automated factory processes, aeronautic gears to smart grid energy systems. As the name implies, Embedded Systems (ES) are systems working within other systems to make them more efficient and effective. This paper elucidates recent technological advancements in this field of Engineering and identifies its relevance to nearly every other area of 21st century technology. To provide a clear understanding of the rising level of relevance of this emerging field of Engineering, this paper further narrows down on the modern energy metering designs which now incorporates embedded systems dynamics to improve its functionalities thereby painting a vivid picture of the positive effects delivered by ES Engineering.
A Practical Application of ARM Cortex-M3 Processor Core in Embedded System Engineering

This paper seeks to elucidate the application of the ARM Cortext-M3 processor based NXP LPC 1768 Microcontroller unit in the design and development of a Temperature Monitoring and Logging System. The write-up starts off with an overview of the principal ARM processor core families, architecture profiles, instruction sets and subsequently, demonstrates its utilization in the design of a Temperature Monitoring and Logging System. The paper shows how the NXP LPC 1768 Microcontroller Unit successfully serves as the brain of the temperature logger device through its standardized interfacing with a TMP102 temperature sensor using the Inter- Integrated Circuit (I2C) protocol. The Microcontroller is programmed using Embedded C while other unique functionalities of the ARM Cortex-M3 core such as Interrupt Handling and System Tick Timer efficiency are also explored.

Design and Implementation of a Java-Based Simulation Package For Spectrum Analysis

In the higher institutions of many third world countries, voids exist in the practical implementation of the engineering curriculum. Procuring the standard equipment for laboratory practical and student practice can at times be a financial burden to these institutions. This publication explains a fill to this void; by contributing a Java based Data Communication Simulation Package with which Communication Engineering students can conduct experiments over a Wi-Fi enabled network. These experiments are majorly in the areas of digital filtration, modulation and spectrum analysis.
Design and Implemenation of an Open Source Computer-Based Testing System With Impact Analysis

The System is a Java Desktop Application designed by the integration of Java and MySQL to help provide a platform whereby computer-based tests can be organized and performed. The basic idea behind designing the system to have a fluid outlook and functional over a Wi-Fi network is simply to offer an operational scheme that is easy to implement by high schools, tertiary institutions and examination bodies with the intention of downloading and adapting it for their own use. Also, to provide a platform whereby prospective CBT examinees can have continuous practice and prior acquaintance with the nitty-gritty of computer based testing in general. This paper concludes by surveying and analyzing the impact of this initiative (being freely available for use and adaptation) on prospective CBT candidate’s test performance.
Leveraging Information Technology in Automating School Management and Student Activities by Successfully Integrating a Java- Based School Management Application Software

Considering the rapidly growing world population and increased enrolment in full course primary school education around the world, this paper elucidates key means of leveraging Information Technology for the effective and efficient management of the increasing pressure associated with schools’ administrative functions and students’ basic activities. Primarily narrowing down to the basic African education framework, this paper sheds more light on the methods which can be adopted for the development of such process improving Information Technology platforms. In doing this, the design and implementation of the Jasper School Management System (a school management solution developed by the author) will be used as a case study. Also, a brief highlight of the impact this Information Technology initiative will have on institutions where it is deployed. The Jasper School Management Software being referenced was built using Java Programming Language in conjunction with MySQL. It was produced to help improve management activities of schools especially in developing countries of the world, with 8 major school management modules incorporated into it. Also, the software is open-source i.e., open to adaptations, improvements and free to download.
A Microcontroller Based Embedded System Design For Device Automation And Control In Intelligent Buildings

Over the past decades, the world of technology has transitioned from the use of gigantic electronic centers to micro programmable systems and chips which can be embedded within other systems to make them more effective and efficient. These systems have now found applications in modern intelligent building designs which are established on the use of technology in the creation of buildings that are safer, more productive and operationally efficient for their occupants. This paper explores the system (PIC microcontroller and other electronic peripherals) in the development of a system for automated Fan and Air Conditioner switching operation in an intelligent building. This is especially giving consideration to user’s preset Switch ON and Switch OFF temperatures. The practical representation of this system is shown using the ISIS Proteus 8.0 simulation package.
The Design and Development of a Computer Controlled Embedded Energy Management Systems

It is no longer new in and around Africa to witness cases of epileptic power supply, with some streets, towns, villages and even parts of cities attesting to having under par electrical power supply. This paper elucidates the complete operation of a novel embedded systems design, geared towards minimizing energy consumption by automatic regulation and dynamic load shedding among other methods of energy conservation. The Computer Controlled Embedded Energy Management System does the regulation by simply interfacing a Java developed desktop application through serial communication with a PIC microcontroller and other electrical and electronics components which make up the embedded system connected to the house's distribution board. The primary drive behind the development of this system is the statistical outlook which shows that Africa's electrical energy generation is well below demand while demand is on an exponential rise. The complete operation of the system is simulated on the ISIS Proteus simulation package and its methodology of operation is well explained in the content of this paper.
